Double Bay Residents Association

Double Bay is an attractive, harbourside village, minutes from centre of Sydney by bus, train or ferry. Situated in the valley between Darling Point, Edgecliff and Bellevue Hill it has a unique shopping area and tree lined residential streets, and is a suburb of the municipality of Woollahra.

DBRA is an incorporated association which for some 35 years has sought to protect the amenity of residents of Double Bay. It has fought against over-development which causes impacts threatening that amenity. These impacts can involve loss of views, oppressiveness, over-shadowing, loss of privacy and noise.

We want to keep that sunny, low-rise village character that attracts people to the Double Bay Centre. In recent years therefore we have fought to uphold the height and bulk controls for the Double Bay Centre established by the Woollahra Local Environment Plan 2014 and the Woollahra Development Control Plan 2015. With some success we have opposed developments which breached those controls.

In residential areas we have sought to have controls amended where they result in unreasonable impacts on residents’ amenity. For example, in 2019 we lodged a petition with 500 residents’ signatures seeking to require developers of residential flat buildings to have a minimum number of on-site parking spaces (as is required of any commercial development) to avoid worsening still further the shortage of on-street parking for residents and their visitors. DBRA fights for residents on noise, traffic, infrastructure and public cleanliness issues.

Our membership is strong at some 300 members and is growing.

The Association is not against change, but prefers to work with the council, state government, local businesses, developers and other community groups, to achieve the best outcome for Double Bay residents. Recent successful outcomes where DBRA was heavily involved are the Kiaora Lands Woolworth development and the retention of the international hotel building at 33 Cross Street.
